To say that I like my food is an understatement. Therefore, when I learned that I was to have nothing to eat after midnight on the night before surgery, I worked out a meal plan for maximum dining pleasure.
Today’s plan included a nice big pancake breakfast, follwed by Pho for lunch, Vietnamese vermicelli for dinner and a tasty little snack of Mac ‘n Cheese at around 11pm. Not exactly the healthiest choices to be sure — but anyone who has spent any time in a hospital knows that the dining options don’t exactly include your favorite comfort foods — and I was determined to ‘load up’.
Imagine my chagrin therefore when the nurse from the surgeon’s office called this morning to tell me that the doctor had forgotten to tell me that I wasn’t supposed to eat today – at all. (Fortunately, she called after I’d already had breakfast, so all was not lost.)
Adding insult to injury, the nurse also told me to take Peglyte, which, put nicely, is a very mean form of intestinal Drano.
“Bummer” I responded.
Sadly, she didn’t get the joke. 🙂
