Ed Meets Mexico

I suppose that the nice thing to do would have been to warn him.

But it was just SO much more fun this way.

Ed and I drove down from the Fortuna Foothills and parked at the Los Algodones border crossing into Mexico.

Within minutes after entering Mexico, Ed was the somewhat sheepish owner of 2 ‘gold’ and one silver necklace.

No, he wasn’t buying them for me. He knows me better than that. I rarely buy jewelry and the only kind I really like is that which is supposedly not suited to my smaller body type — big, gawdy and gloriously flagrant.

So, fine necklaces are hardly my style.

Nope, he succumbed to the overwhelming pressure of Mexican street vendors’ sales tactics.

“Hey amigo, just for you, they’re almost free today!”

Ya right.

Twenty bucks down the drain for 2 necklaces which might have contained .000000001 grams of gold.

To make him happy (and try to keep the vendors off MY back), I donned the silver necklace and it actually looked nice.

As for the gold necklaces?

He GAVE them to the vendor from whom he bought a leather Harley-Davidson vest for our godson, Gavin.

LOL.

Gavin’s mom Carol is gonna HATE that when that arrives in the mail.

Anyway, here’s the warning for you.

If you go to Mexico… stay strong.

Barter on only those items you really want and walk away until they agree to the price you are willing to pay.

Doing just that, I came away with a pair of beautiful, gawdy REAL silver hoop earrings for just 10 bucks. 🙂
