Crater Lake Resort was fully booked when we planned this vacation and I should have known, based on the really tacky website, what we were likely to find at the Diamond Lake Resort.
As you can see from the picture, the setting is idyllic.
Idyllic, however, stopped at the lakeshore.
On checking in, I was immediately tempted to rush back to the car, grab my stash of Windex and paper towelling and get to work. The windows were FILTHY throughout the joint. Ugh… and especially UGH to look at while you’re eating.
The motel room unit that we had was clean but oh, So SO basic. No telephone, NO Internet connection… oh woe was me! Worse, the sheets were too small for the bed, resulting in contact with the mattress should you be so unfortunate as to want to turn over once in the night.
Worst of all was the restaurant.
Although nice and polite, the over-worked wait staff could barely keep it together and managed to mess up our orders each time we used the dining facilities. Instead of the roast beef sandwich, I got a hot roast beef sandwich drowning in gravy.
That kind of food is typical for the place, despite the ‘heart-healthy’ options, which if I recall correctly consisted of a fruit plate and cottage cheese. Ours weren’t the only orders that got messed up either. I saw nearly everyone in the place either complain to the waitress, or like me, shrug their shoulders and then belly up to the plate.
For the pleasure of not getting what we ordered, we paid through the nose. Prices in their restaurant were actually higher than at the Crater Lake Lodge. I can’t remember exact prices, but fair to say that you won’t get a greasy hamburger for under 12 bucks and more in the ‘dining room’. Actually, prices were so ridiculous in the dining room, that they spelled them out on the menu like “Twenty-four dollars” in a curly-type font so as to make it difficult to quickly decipher.
The experience at Diamond Lake Resort wasn’t all icky and expensive however. I enjoyed a few Black Butte porters while playing pool in the Lounge, which appeared to be quite clean… probably because it was so darkly lit. 🙂
