The Via Allegro Ristorante in Toronto is located in a strip mall across the road from a Home Depot. This may put off many diners but appearances as they say can be deceiving.
This restaurant is one of our favorite places to eat in the world. Eat is the wrong word for going to the Via Allergo for it is an experience, starting with the decor, service and the FOOD. A true five star rating.
The wine cellar offers the best vintages available and is one of the best stocked in North America. Be prepared to spend a little time reviewing the wine list it’s the size of the Toronto phone book.
Now that I have raved about this restaurant all good things have there downside. We had lunch reservations there on December 22nd at one o’clock. We arrived about ten minutes early and found the lobby packed. We were told it would be about a fifteen minute wait. Well it turned out to be more like forty minutes. The receptionist asked if we would like to wait at the bar but failed to notice there was no room. Rosalind’s mother was with us and is in her nineties. We had to ask for a chair for her.
The receptionist took drink orders from the assembled crowd and before they arrived a waiter brought us all champagne and apologies. When our drinks arrived they were accompanied by a bill. A horrified waiter collected some of the bills from the patrons and Ros handed the receptionist ours.
Arriving at our table there were a few minor short comings on service.
The waiter was helpful making lunch suggestions and the meal was excellent as usual.
You just get spoiled at this place and expect perfection. The Allergo did not stand up to it’s usual level of service this time, only three stars but it will not keep us from coming back
